About GCSE's

How GCSE's work

- They are usually taken in years 10 and 11 at secondary school

- Most students take 8-10 GCSE's as a record of achievement from their secondary education

- All students are required to take Maths and English, with many schools also requiring students to take Sciences (Biology, Chemistry, Physics) a Language (French, SpanishGerman).

- A broad range of academic subjects are also available including the humanities (Geography, History, Modern Studies), Business Studies, Computing, Music and Design and Technology

- There are 5 examining bodies for GCSE's in the UK - The Assessment and Qualifications Alliance (AQA), The Oxford, Cambridge and RSA Examinations (OCR), Pearson Edexcel, Welsh Joint Education Committee (WJEC) and the Council for the Curriculum, Examinations & Assessment (CCEA)

The Marking System

The marking system is. gradually being changed for GCSE's and will be fully rolled out by 2020.  The new system replaces letters with numbers, and creates greater differentiation in grades, specially at the top end

9 is higher than a current A*
8 is between an A* and A.
7 is are equal to an A
6 is equivalent to a high B
5 is between a B and C
4 is equal to a grade C
3 is in between a D and E
2 is between an E and F
1 is a G
